Google announced the Pixel Watch 5 on 12 August 2026. Pre-orders opened the same day and it reaches shelves on 20 August, starting at US$399 for the 41mm and US$429 for the 45mm. A Stephen Curry Special Edition in 45mm is US$579 and arrives 3 September.

Health Guardian

The big addition is a bundle Google calls Health Guardian. The headline piece is Breathing Emergency Detection, which Google says is a first for a smartwatch. Using the optical heart sensor, accelerometer and barometer alongside on-device AI, it watches for severe and persistent drops in blood oxygen of the sort caused by drug toxicity, severe pneumonia or choking. If it detects one and you do not respond, the watch can call emergency services and pass on your location.

Here is the part that matters if you live here. Google's own announcement says it is launching first in Europe. The feature is CE marked and has not been cleared or evaluated by the United States FDA, and Google lists a long set of exclusions: it is not intended for people with pre-existing respiratory conditions, heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, sickle cell anaemia or pregnancy, and it will not detect anything after you have been asleep for 30 minutes. No Australian availability date has been given.

Alongside it are three new monthly trend summaries: blood pressure trends, sleep breathing quality trends and insulin resistance trends. Google is clear these are general wellness features, not medical devices. They do not diagnose anything, they are not screening tools for diabetes, hypertension or sleep apnoea, and they should not be used to change medication. They are also marked coming soon, with your first summary arriving after a month of wear.

GPS and fitness

Google claims its most accurate GPS route tracking yet, twice as accurate as the previous generation in difficult environments. The method is interesting: it traces satellite ray paths through 3D building models borrowed from Google Maps and corrects readings against a global network of weather reference stations in real time.

Google also says it outperformed the Apple Watch Ultra 3 and Garmin Fenix 8 Pro. That comes from Google's own internal study in July 2026 using pre-production watches on sessions of three hours or less, so it is a manufacturer's test, not an independent one.

Sleep tracking gets 15 per cent more accurate sleep stage detection, bedtime automations that pause audiobooks when you drop off, and Smart Wake, which watches your heart rate and movement in the 30 minutes before your alarm and wakes you at a lighter point in your sleep.

A step by step strength training experience on the wrist is listed as coming soon, and Google Health Coach, which builds the custom workouts and adapts them to your recovery, needs a Google Health Premium subscription sold separately.

Hardware

The Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 Accelerated chip brings 50 per cent more RAM and a 12 per cent CPU boost for what Google says is a 20 per cent overall speed increase. The display is a 3,000 nit domed Actua 360. Battery is up to 30 hours on the 41mm and up to 40 hours on the 45mm. New colours are Fog, Canyon as a 41mm exclusive, and Olive with a Pyrite housing.

Australian pricing was not published on the Google Store pages I could read at the time of writing.
